The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated more than three thousand years ago. Union occurs between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga classes are made up of asanas, a sanskrit word meaning postures or poses.  Yoga is more than just stretching, although stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about balance. You create balance in the body by developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The practice of yoga includes letting go of the ego and accepting that no one is better than anyone else. Everyone is just doing his or her best on any given day.  Anyone can start a yoga practice, even if you don't feel like you are very flexible or very strong. These things will improve the longer you practice. In addition to practicing the poses, yoga classes may also include instruction on breathing, call and response chanting, meditation, or an inspirational theme provided by the teacher. You might find that the physical practice of yoga leads into a spiritual practice, or maybe you simply enjoy a physical workout that makes you feel great. Whatever your preferences, you can find a class at Heart Stone Studio that suits your style.


Meditation describes a state of consciousness when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns. Meditation is awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from distraction they are effective meditations. Meditation can bring physical and psychological benefits. Physical benefits can include a decrease in blood pressure and an improvement in breathing due to the increase of air flow that gets to the lungs. Regular meditation can help to decrease or eliminate physical pain.  Psychological benefits include relaxation, a decrease in stress, improved mood, improved memory and a decrease in depression.  The meditation class at Heart Stone Studio called Renew, combines traditional awareness meditation with gentle yoga and healing guided imagery to allow you to heal yourself and be your own guide along your path toward wellness.


Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which focuses on core strength, flexibility, and awareness. Heart Stone Studio offers mat Pilates classes based on, but not limited to, the exercises of Joseph Pilates.  Core exercises will help you become stronger, longer, leaner, and more able to do anything with grace and ease.  Modification is the key to Pilates exercise success.  All exercises are developed with modifications that can make the workout safe and challenging, no matter if you are a beginning or advanced student.  Click on the instructor bios to learn more about Heart Stone Studio Pilates instructors.
