Building the Next Generation of Arizona Climbers
The Rocks and Ropes Youth Team is the premier youth rock climbing program in Southern Arizona. Founded in 2008 with a roster of just 11 kids, Head Coach Jon Mavko has built a large program with dozens of dedicated youth. Youth Team athletes routinely qualify for National level competitions as well as pursue a lifetime of activity in the sport.
Rock Climbing has skyrocketed in popularity in the United States over the last decade, especially with the Nation’s youth. Youth programs are popping up all around the country, and now with climbing included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this trend will only continue. Rock Climbing is a uniquely challenging sport. It is a continual lesson in body movement, awareness and coordination. Besides physical demands, climbing also requires a great deal of mental fortitude, including problem solving, determination, and optimism. Although each athlete pursues individual goals, climbing is very social in nature. The team setting provided reinforces teamwork, friendships and hard work. The Youth Team welcomes climbers of all ages, genders and ability levels.
